Class 2/1B - Mr. Ball

Spring Term 2012

For Spring Term we will be using our topic on houses to help the children develop their understanding of Geography, History and Science.

In Geography we will study the use of maps and plans to recognise features of our local surroundings and the types of buildings that are contained withinin the local area we live in.

This will naturally link into History where we will study how houses and their contents have changed and also how towns and villages have developed over the years.

In Science we will look at electrical circuits, conductors and insulators and how they help us in our homes. As well as this we will look at light and dark and investigate various light sources.

We will explore the topic using Art and Design and interpret and express ideas through a varied choice of mediums and techniques which will help the children understand the topic more fully.

In P.E. we are lucky to be involved in a Coaching in the Community scheme which gives us access to a dedicated team teaching foootball and dance. This will take place on Thursday and Friday afternoons.

For R.E. we will continue to explore ideas including symbols and special stories through the traditions and ceremonies of different faiths.

In Literacy the children will carry on developing their skills by experiencing a varied choice of literature and through the scheme of talk for writing to enhance their story telling skills. We will also be settling back into our 'Letters and Sounds' phonics programme.

In Numeracy the children will be progressing their skills in the 4 main operations (addition, subtraction, multiplying and division) through a variety of practical activities and scenarios and they will also be collecting and organising data to help answer questions.

Autumn Term 2011/2012

The topic for this Autumn Term is toys and the children's learning will be developed by study toys in different ways.

Our Science themes are pushes and pulls and sorting and using materials. We will be studying how toys could move and how surfaces affect this movement. We will look at appropriate materials that toys are made of and why certain materials are used. This will link into our technology which is to look at how to design and make a toy puppet.

For History the children will look at toys from the past and have a chance to compare them to toys of today. We will look at how puppets were used in the past to entertain and we will also look at specific toys like teddy bears.

In Art we will try and create some toy inspired repeating patterns, some observational drawings and we will also use art to help inspire our toy designs.

Music and Dance will cover the movement of toys and music that would be appropriate for toys to dance to.

In Literacy we will continue to develop the children's reading and writing skills. We will encourage children to explore new words to describle things, develop their letter formation skills and use the 'Letters and Sounds Scheme' to develop reading skills. The children will be given every opportunity to try and write creatively.

In Numeracy we are going to reinforce the idea of counting numbers accurately and writing numbers clearly and being conmfortable with number bonds. This will ensure a secure knowledge base which the children will require for the rest of their school lives. We will also explore shapes and measures.
