Class 2/1S - Mrs. Sedgwick/Mrs. Stacey

Spring Term 2012

For Spring Term we will be using our topic on houses to help the children develop their understanding of Geography, History and Science.

In Geography we will study the use of maps and plans to recognise features of our local surroundings and the types of buildings that are contained withinin the local area we live in.

This will naturally link into History where we will study how houses and their contents have changed and also how towns and villages have developed over the years.

In Science we will look at electrical circuits, conductors and insulators and how they help us in our homes. As well as this we will look at light and dark and investigate various light sources.

We will explore the topic using Art and Design and interpret and express ideas through a varied choice of mediums and techniques which will help the children understand the topic more fully.

In P.E. we are lucky to be involved in a Coaching in the Community scheme which gives us access to a dedicated team teaching foootball and dance. This will take place on Thursday and Friday afternoons.

For R.E. we will continue to explore ideas including symbols and special stories through the traditions and ceremonies of different faiths. In Literacy the children will carry on developing their skills by experiencing a varied choice of literature and through the scheme of talk for writing to enhance their story telling skills. We will also be settling back into our 'Letters and Sounds' phonics programme.

In Numeracy the children will be progressing their skills in the 4 main operations (addition, subtraction, multiplying and division) through a variety of practical activities and scenarios and they will also be collecting and organising data to help answer questions.

Autumn Term 2011/2012

Our topic this term is toys and the children will study toys in different ways to develop their learning across the curriculum.

In Science we will be exploring how toys move and work by examining forces and motion. We will be looking at how the surface affects the movement of toys and how slope affects the speed of travel. We will also look at the different materials used to make toys and why certain materials are chosen. This will link to our design and technology which is to design and make a puppet.

For History, we will look at toys from the past and have a chance to explore and play will different toys. We will compaire these with toys of today. We will look at how puppets were used to entertain.

In Art, children will be drawing and painting different toys, looking at repeating patterns and they will make a peg dolly. We will also examine paintings where toys are used.

We will be listening to music which will link to toys and we will create our own toy compositions. We will also create dances linked to being toys.

In Literacy we will continue to develop children's reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. We will explore stories with familiar settings and we will use different stories to inspire drama and writing. We will also look at different poetry with patterns and rhyme. We will be writing instructions for our non-fiction. We will continue to use Letters and Sounds to aid spelling and reading.

In Numeracy, we are going to reinforce the idea of counting accurately and writing numbers clearly. The children will develop their understanding of number ordering. We will be exploring addition and subtraction and look at problem solving. We will use money in our toy shop. Children will also continue to secure their understanding of shape and measures.
