Class 6K Mrs. Khine

Spring Term 2012

Literacy

Our focus in Literacy this term will be Myths and Legends, stories by significant authors, 'Argument texts' and poetry.

We will be reading myths and legends, identifying the features of the genre and subsequently writing our own. Another fiction unit will involve comparing the written styles of two significant children's authors; Jacqueline Wilson and Lemony Snicket (Daniel Handler). Both of these authors writing with the 'realistic fiction' genre but have contrasting styles. Children will learn to adopt both authors' techniques and styles.

We will also be looking at 'Argument texts'. Children will be exploring a controversial issue (graffiti in the community - is it an art form?) through reading and discussing a wide range of texts providing examples of for, against and balanced views. These will include a variety of formats, on paper and on screen, and probably some media texts, for example TV clips.

In our poetry unit, we will be reading poems that powerfully communicate the writer's thoughts and feelings about a particular issue. We will then be writing our own.

During guided reading we will continue to practise our comprehension skills, using inference and deduction to understand meanings within a text.

Numeracy

We will be learning to:

  • Round to the nearest 10, 100 or 1000.
  • Round decimals to the nearest whole number or tenth.
  • Use decimal notation up to Hths, order a set of decimals.
  • Find all pairs of factors of any numbers up to 100.
  • Multiplication; partitioning, using close facts.
  • Calculate area of rectangles and compound shapes.
  • Calculate area of right angled triangles.
  • Construct and interpret conversion graphs.

Autumn Term 2011/12

Literacy

Fiction genres: Children will be introduced to and explore the wide range of genres covered by children's fiction. They explore their own and others' reading preferences within this range and extend their own reading repertoire as they work towards identification and appreciation of the distinguishing features of each genre. We will begin looking at sci-fi, adventure and fantasy stories.

Biography and autobiography: We will read the autobiographies of eminent children's author Roald Dahl and discuss the subjective nature of biographies. Children will then be invited to bring in their own 'memory box' to aid recal when writing their own autobiography.

Poetry: We will explore the use of personification in poetry and then use this experience as a basis for shared and independed writing in our own personification poems.

Numeracy

This term we will be finding the difference between a positive and a negative integer, or two negative integers, in context; using decimal notation for tenths, hundreths and thousanths; partition, round and order decimals with up to three places, and position them on the number line; using knowedge of place value and multiplication facts to 10 x 10 to derive related multiplication and division facts involving decimals (e.g. 0.8 x 7, 4.8 ÷ 6); calculating mentally with integers and decimals: U.T + U.T, TU x U, TU ÷ U, U..operations and tests of divisibility to estimate and check results. Simply put, our main topics are:

  • multiples, factors, primes and prime factors
  • tables fo 10 x 10; squares, squares of multiples of 10
  • tests of divisibility
  • mental methods: multiplication and division facts applied to decimals
  • patterns, relationships and properties of numbers and shapes; suggesting hypotheses
  • representing a problem using calculations, symbols, formulae, diagrams
  • making and drawing shapes
  • using a calculatore including to find inverses
Topic

This term we will be making a comparison between the coastal town of Clacton and the village of Rayne. During our trip we will be identifying tourist attractions, hotels, shops and local amenities. Following our trip, we will be suing ordnance survey maps to locate these places. We will be making a comparison between Rayne and Claction. Based on what we see in Clacton and the filed/shore study we do in Norfold, we will study coastal erosion and the formation of beaches, sand dunes and salt marshes. Our science topic will link in with this as we study rocks, soils and different materials.

Our Design and Technology topic this term is based on the seaside entertainment of puppetry. We will be making a modern day 'Punch and Judy' puppet theatre and puppets.
